Auguste Rodin was born in 1840 and died in 1917. In his time he was considered the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo. His style was both classic and romantic. Rodin followed nature closely and presented it exactly as he saw it. It was he who let the way in modern sculpture. Auguste Rodin was never awarded a national honor which was probably due to the fact that he lived during the years that his country was at war with Germany. In 1967, during the 50th anniversary of Rodin's death, he was finally awarded with the public tribute to Preiss.

For the first time Rodin hired a model to sit for him. The model was not a professional, but rather a neighborhood handyman named Bibi. Rodin was drawn to his features and wanted to depict him as he was, broken nose and all. The Man with the Broken Nose became The Mask of the Man with the Broken Nose when the cold conditions of Rodin's studio caused the back of the head to freeze and break off. Rodin, favoring the element of chance, wanted to exhibit the portrait bust as it was. He continued to work on it for more than a year before submitting it to the salon. Much to his disappointment, the Salon rejected the work twice during 1864 and 1865.
