About the Artist: Antoine-Louis Barye was a French sculptor most famous for his work as a sculptor of animals. Born in Paris, Barye began his career as a goldsmith, like many sculptors of the Romantic Period. After studying under Sculptor Francois-Joseph Bosio and painter Baron Antoine Jean Gros he was in 1818 admitted to the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1883, while working for Fauconnier, the goldsmith, he discovered his true predilection from watching the animals in the Jardin des Plantes, making vigorous studies of them in pencil drawings comparable to those of Delacroix, then modelling them into sculpture on a large or small scale. In 1832 he had mastered a style of his own in the
Lion with Snake Bronze Statue.
Elephants are large land mammals, three species of elephant are generally recognized today: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant. Elephants are the largest living land animals on Earth today. The elephant's gestation period is 22 months, the longest of any land animal. At birth, an elephant calf typically weighs 105 kilograms or about 230 lbs. They typically live for 50 to 70 years, but the oldest recorded elephant lived for 82 years.
