Auguste Rodin was born in 1840 and died in 1917. In his time he was considered the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo. His style was both classic and romantic. Rodin followed nature closely and presented it exactly as he saw it. It was he who let the way in modern sculpture. Auguste Rodin was never awarded a national honor which was probably due to the fact that he lived during the years that his country was at war with Germany. In 1967, during the 50th anniversary of Rodin's death, he was finally awarded with the public tribute to Preiss.
Rodin received a commission for a monument to Balzac in 1891 from the Societe des Gens de Lettres. After seven years' preparation by reading the author's works and studying his biography, and by executing about 50 studies, Rodin exhibited a model of the work in the Salon of 1898. Not only did the Societe reject the work, but it received extraordinary controversy in the press. Criticism centered on the fact that Rodin's treatment of a famous person did not follow the formula for aggrandizing the subject and on the lack of a finished surface, so important fin academic sculptural style.
